Photojournalist for Ethiopia and Niger

Seeking photographer/journalist for agriculture, health, and nutrition project in Ethiopia and Niger

SDN is seeking proposals to produce visual and written communications for a US-based NGO to cover their projects in Ethiopia and Niger. The NGO requires portraits and environmental photographs from the field, interviews with key players, and compelling written success stories. Final deliverables are 50-100 photographs and six success stories in English for use on the NGO’s website.

The NGO is seeking images of people who are farming, providing capacity building and advisory services and using the NGO’s technical approach. The success stories should be uplifting, dignified and compelling. They should paint a picture of the subject’s background, what their life was like before the NGO’s intervention, how the intervention has improved their life, and what they expect their future to look like.

The NGO will identify the subjects for the success stories and the journalist may also identify and shoot the locales he/she deems relevant. A member of the NGO staff will provide transportation and escort the journalist to the project sites and provide translation, if necessary. NGO is estimating three days in the field in each country, in addition to travel days. They are looking for completion of the travel and delivery of the photographs and success stories by June 30, 2017.

NGO will arrange travel and hotel, and is flexible on dates, if travel costs can be shared with another organization.

NGO will have full, exclusive, royalty-free license of the images and text that will be used for the organization’s communication materials. Journalist will retain copyright of all images and text, and have full rights to work not delivered to the NGO. All work will be credited whenever technically feasible.

Selected candidate must be proficient at writing and photography, and must be fluent in written English. Preference will be given to candidate already in the region, or can combine travel costs with other work in the region, as NGO wants to cut down on international travel costs.

The selected candidate will be subcontractor to SDN. SDN will review photographs and text and work with photographer on final editing of both.

For estimating purposes, project will begin and end in Addis Ababa. NGO will pay for transportation between Ethiopia and Niger, and all travel, meals, and accommodations during project.

Proposal should include costs for:

  • Three days shooting and interviewing in each country (six days total)
  • Cost of each additional day of shooting and interviewing
  • Any costs associated with traveling to Addis Ababa
  • Assume at least two days of non-shooting time while traveling between countries
  • 50-100 final edited high resolution color photographs
  • Six written success stories, each 700-1000 words.

NGO will cover expenses for visas, if required. Exact schedule to be determined, although final shooting and writing needs to be completed by June 30, 2017.

Final proposal should include

  • Letter of Interest
  • Resume
  • Costs as outlined above
  • Samples of similar type of photography work, or links to projects on SDN
  • Professional website if available
  • Writing samples
  • Contact information for three references
