Title:
Children of Janaseva Sisubhavan
Location:
India
Janaseva Sisubhaven, Aluva, Kerala
Organized begging that involves the abduction of children known as the beggar mafia is common in India. The state of Kerala is among those with the most severe problem. There are few organizations working to save these children. One of them, a not for profit shelter called Janaseva Sisubhavan is doing just that. Janaseva Sisubhavan is a home/shelter for children rescued from the streets of India where they suffered from abduction, abuse, forced labor, illness, homelessness and the ruthlessness of the beggar mafia. The shelter has rescued more than 1000 children from the streets and currently provides food, clothing, healthcare, shelter, basic education and safety for 200 children between the ages of 2-18. Janaseva Sisubhavan has also faced helpless situations, where rescued children are sometimes forced to be given back to the same anti - social elements from whom they were rescued.

I spent 3 weeks in India. For part of that time I worked at and documented the Children of JS. These children are the lucky ones; rescued, relatively healthy, well fed…hungering only for more adult love and attention.
I am a professional photographer living outside Philadelphia, PA. Over the years I have created several personal documentary projects based on personal interests, including The Age of Nursing Homes: Warehousing our Elders; Womens Work: Women at Work in the 90’s; and Children of Janaseva Sisubhavan.
