Education for street children
Photographer: Joseph O'Connor Lincoln
Exhibit Title: Education for street children
Location: Delhi, India
A study from 2010 showed that Delhi had approximately 50,000 children living on the street and with a population growth rate of 1.46% in India this number will continue to grow. For these children to have a chance at escaping poverty it is vitally important that they receive an education.
The Shri Bal Krishna Sarthi Charitable Trust is a centre for education and vocational skills in Delhi. It was established on the 4th of April 2002. The goal of the project is to enable children living on the street to improve their opportunities for achieving an improved standard of life. In 2012 there were approximately 300 students. The majority of students come from the locality; however a few come from a wider radius. The project receives no government funding, although they have applied for it. The majority of financial support comes from donations.
