The Difficult Period

Alexandre Mavrellis Oktan | Cuba

The Difficult Period, or Special Period symbolized by a map of Cuba as seen from underneath.
A work of art by Omar Pascual Castillo that encapsulates the general mood during this time.

The Difficult Period, or The Special Period as it was named by the Cuban Government, documents the times in Havana, Cuba, following the collapse of the Soviet Union. At that time, Cuba lost most of it's export markets, and with the ongoing embargo, found itself enduring very difficult economic times, leaving the population to wonder what would come next.

Since, Alexandre has established himself in the Film and Television industry as a Cinematographer, Camera Operator and Director while conituing to produce his personal photography work.

Alexandre’s documentary photography work has recently been published in Shades of Grey Magazine, his photographic essays such as A Place Called Beirut, Sunday Service, The Difficult Period, Used Clothes, reveal a very strong documentary and artistic vision. Alexandre is an experienced and very skilled visual storyteller with a sensibility for human stories and for the human condition around the world.
