I made these images in 2001 while working as a Director of Photography on the documentary “Nubia and the Mysteries of Kush”.
Four things have stayed with me.
How warm and welcoming the Sudanese people were. The residents of the small towns where we camped to film the archeological sites always invited me to their house for tea. We communicated with my hazy Arabic and “Learn to Speak Arabic” book, their almost non-existent English and a lot of hand gestures.
The second thing was how little these poor people have. They have lived with nothing in a vast open space next to the Nile for who knows how long.
The third thing that has stayed with me is that at night, while sitting outside of the tent and sharing a hookah pipe with Omar, our driver and guide through the desert, I would witness nothingness, absolutely no light or sound. The only moving thing was a satellite and an occasional shooting star.
Lastly, the images have stayed with me. I thought I would finally share them.
