Who should these street children turn to when the rich hold a thumb over those of much lower economic status and the poor are getting poorer as in many other countries in the world. Fortunately, there are social service/NGOs who have dedicated their time and money to manifest Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, "physiological, safety, love/belonging, esteem and self actualization" on behalf of the children. Many of these kids become street dwellers after they leave their rural homes to urbanized areas of the country-for reasons ranging from abuse to earning money to support themselves and/or families. India is one of the countries of the world which has an exponential number of street children. When we people of means create a stronger partnership with proper child advocacy groups, we can aide in the socialization and rehabilitation of street children so they may live as productive members of society.
Much of every day society are indifferent or have very little sympathy for these children as they are viewed as nuisance thugs. Many of these children are forced onto the streets and do not actually want to be living in such as a manner though some have stated they have just become so accustomed and have lost hope that they remain on the streets.
The unfortunate side is there are far and few in between supporting educated and experienced child activists in their efforts to eradicate or at least improve the lives of street children-so, many of these homeless children often fall pray to physical, sexual and moral danger and pulling them off the streets and socializing means placing them in institutions or over crowed orphanages where safety isn't always guaranteed.
These children were a pleasure to work with and I was more than happy to be of aide to them as well.
