As a continuation to my Special Siblings project, I have followed Molly and her siblings for a few years. Disability is part of the human condition, and while Molly has a physical disability, every family has their quirks, their own particular dramas, black sheep and stories, and no two are the same. I have always felt that my own family was quite normal, if there is such a thing. But what is normal to one family is completely foreign to another, yet we all have familial ties, whether they are broken or strong.
This universal relationship between people is what my work is about. The way that families join together, or fall apart is such a universal theme. The relationship between special needs siblings and their families, who are dealing with a physical manifestation of something we all deal with in our lives, whether it’s physical, mental or emotional, is one way to examine how we all connect, and belong to a group, and how we view ourselves as a part of that group.
