Title:
Life Without Limb: Landmine Victims on the Thailand-Myanmar Border
Location:
Tak, Thailand
Saw Klo Say, who lost his eyesight and right leg to a landmine blast, stretches out on his bed at the Care Villa. Klo Say says that after the accident he frequently contemplated suicide, but has regained hope since coming to the Care Villa.
The Care Villa is a shelter for blind landmine in Thailand's Mae La refugee camp. The Villa provides full time care for 13 physically handicapped and dependent landmine survivors who have lost their hands, legs, eyesight and hearing. Day only care is also provided for an additional 7 blind amputees who live with their families in the refugee camp. Like thousands of others in Mae La, the residents of Care Villa have fled ongoing conflict and poverty in neighboring Myanmar's Karen State.
