Malaria is still endemic to much of the world. Over ninety per cent of the anuual worldwide deaths from this disease occur in Africa nd most of those deaths are children under the age of five. During the last ten years, I have been privileged to work with The Malaria Institute at Macha, Zambia, The Rakai Health Sciences Project in Uganda, The Bill & Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health and the Center for Communications Programs at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. by focusing educational and practical resources on mothers and children and by capacity building within the public health infrastructure of African countries, these organizations are empowering communities to radically reduce the incidence of Malaria
I have personally witnessed the transformative efforts and results of these fine institutions and met many of the dedicated public health professionals who serve their communities here and on the continent of Africa.
