In over a decade of travels throughout the world, I have spent time with people on all sides of conflicts. Interacting with them and sharing their life experiences, I have found that individual stories are the key to dispelling stereotypes and fighting misconceptions. Absent the visual cues of costume, ethnicity and geography, we are all indistinguishable human beings. This understanding is interwoven in my photography, presentations and lectures, and work I do with business leaders on opposite sides of geopolitical and religious conflicts; in all of these areas I work to address issues of perception, stereotyping, histories, and “the other.”
It takes constant and conscious effort to see past the stereotypes that we as Westerners have created. If we fail to do so, preconceptions are all that we see and we miss understanding the context and nuances of a given situation. For people in areas of turmoil, conflict is a part of their daily life, and yet life goes on. Through my images I seek to humanize conflict and bring untold human stories to light.
