Suicide graffiti.
Spain has been Europe's poster child for economic development during the past 10 years and Madrid the symbol of it's success. Today, three years into a world recession and Spain is once again at the forefront . . . this time as a symbol of economic collapse.
A few days and nights in Madrid makes one wonder what happened to a capital once renowned for its sophistication and charm. At noon in the downtown center, prostitutes of all ages, shapes and sizes battle for customers with whistles and cat calls. Groups of down and out alcoholics huddle around a bottle, laying claim to benches and plazas. Homeless fill the doorways; even the grand cathedral entrance is now a home made of boxes and shopping carts.
