Kibera has a population of over one million and covers 1% of Nairobi's land area, yet houses 25% of the city's population. Children who have a chance to goto school here are very fortunate.
Kibera is Africa’s second biggest township. Located 5 Km from Nairobi's city center, Kibera holds between half to 1 million people, most of which live in dire conditions, lacking basic needs such as drinking water or electricity. Growing up in such a challenging setting, education is the only chance that the children have to improve their future.
This series was taken at an elementary school located inside this community. Spending one day within these classrooms, the goal was to depict an everyday story in these children’s' lives at school. Classrooms here are falling apart & lack basic needs. The staff does their best with what they have, offering the children a safe and comfortable teaching environment. A tremendous amount of care and devotion goes onto the children who are deprived of a healthy life and have very little chance to find a way out of extreme poverty. In a place where 1 out of 5 children do not live to see their fifth birthday, it is breathtaking to feel the amount of positive energy, drive and love among the children.
