LA TINAIA. Art as social redemption.

tamajano (Emiliano Palei) | Florence, Italy

From 2005 until 2013 I was daily involved in the running of the workshop. I was part of La Tinaia life, living in close contact with the people that went through it: I saw them arriving, finding the strength to leave behind the isolation due to psychiatric disorders, the strength to still believe in the value of one's own uniqueness, in those parts of oneself that show the differences between each and every person. This personal journey made independently, without judgement, so different from therapy.

I had the chance to closely observe this creative and productive phase, I saw intimate expressions able to become visible and shareable. Thus I saw the birth of works of art that sometimes have had a remarkable recognition in the Art field, and sometimes fundamental to the personal journey of the author. Above all, both cases have reaffirmed new, precious rights of a citizen for those who had the strength to take this journey.

The power, the courage, the beauty achieved will be for me an everlasting landmark and an unfading memory.

I believe that this work, is a photographic memory, more than a photographic tale. In fact it's impossible for me to talk about La Tinaia in a detached way, because I was part of it, working there every day for 8 years.

These pictures are only a very emotional attempt (and embarrassing, because of their beginnings) to keep visually some feelings that accompanied me during my visit at San Salvi one year after the end of my work at La Tinaia.

La Tinaia was founded in February 1975, as a creative space with therapeutic-rehabilitating aims for in-patients of a mental hospital (V. Chiarugi) in Florence, in contrast to the repressive procedures of the system. It created its own history of the potentiality of art, of creating art, as a way to enter the closed worlds of madness, as an opportunity to communicate and restore relationships broken or denied by the destructive power of the mental disorder.

The social value of this art, and its extraordinary aesthetic importance immediately gave a wide visibility and diffusion in exhibitions and local markets. La Tinaia's list of the exhibitions all over the world, is very long.

La Tinaia has been part of the Mental Health Service of Zone 2 of Florence since the end of the '90s and has received patients from the whole of the Florence area.
