Nancy Farese

Nancy FareseNancy Richards Farese is a social entrepreneur, photographer and philanthropist whose work centers on the nexus of art and social change. She believes that photos have a unique capacity to connect people to vital social issues, and to each other; and that there has never been a more important time to understand and advance that transformative power.

In 2009, Nancy founded the non-profit, PhotoPhilanthropy, to reward and promote advocacy through visual storytelling. PhotoPhilanthropy’s Activist Awards and exhibitions amplified the work of hundreds of photographers shooting “photography that matters” in 88 countries in collaboration with more than 400 social agencies.

Nancy re-positioned PhotoPhilanthropy as CatchLight in 2015, dedicating the organization to visual storytelling and the power of photography to drive social change. CatchLight serves as a transformational force, urgently bringing resources together with partners to help photographers of all levels tell stories that have social impact. Nancy currently serves as board chair of CatchLight.

Nancy has a Masters in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and is currently a Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy.

Catchlight

CatchLight is a San Francisco Bay Area-based nonprofit that believes in the power of visual storytelling to foster a more nuanced and empathetic understanding of the world. CatchLight serves as a transformational force, urgently bringing resources and organizations together to support leaders in a thriving visual ecosystem. The Uncornered Project

We have all been cornered in life and we all have the potential to free ourselves from tough circumstances and bad decisions. We can change our narrative. We can be Uncornered.

It's not just the famous amongst us that find the resiliency to become Uncornered. It's the unacknowledged men and women, mother and fathers, who have endeavored and overcome. It's the gang-involved youth who find themselves both literally and figuratively trapped on street corners.

This photo project reveals the universal experience of what it means to be Uncornered. Whether you're a powerful public figure, an athlete, a business leader, a celebrity, or gang involved.

Through bold portraits. John Huet has captured the humanity of a broad range of people. sharing in their own words a moment when they felt cornered and how in turn they became Uncornered.

Over the next year, this documentary project will be used to spread the uncornered message through exhibits, advertlsing, and social media because we believe that when people become Uncornered, their best potential is unleashed.

Artist Bio

"I grew up in a small town outside of Pittsburgh where photography wasn't something you set your sights on doing for a living. I moved south and went to photography school in Florida where I made the decision to become a successful commercial photographer. Along the way, I became interested in moving images and became a director as well.

"I worked my ass off, and I've had the privilege of working with some of the best creatives in the world who hired me to do what I love to do -- make images. As a result, I've traveled the world and found myself in places I could never have imagined, and I've met amazing people along the way. I've worked with a dream list of clients, and I've won enough industry awards that even my mom is proud.

"I’ve had a couple of books published, my photographs have been exhibited in galleries and museums in the U.S. and Europe, and I have photographs in the permanent collections of a few museums.

"I have a hard time differentiating between my assignment work and my personal work. Whether I'm doing an ad campaign, a look book, an editorial shoot, a TV spot or a pro bono project, it's personal for me. Everything I shoot is personal. My favorite job is always my next job because there’s nothing I enjoy more than making images, aside from my family of course.

"I love what I do. I truly do. I couldn’t have chosen a better career for myself, and I can’t imagine spending my life doing anything other than exactly what I’m doing."

Documentary Matters

Documentary Matters is an initiative of the Social Documentary Network and Digital Silver Imaging to provide a place for photographers to meet with others involved with or interested in documentary photography and discuss ongoing or completed project. This is a free and open meeting for anyone interested in presenting, viewing, or discussing documentary photography.

You don't need to be a professional, expert, or established--you just need to be committed to the documentary form and committed to learning from feedback from others. And you don't need to be a photographer or presenting your work to attend. Everyone is invited to join us, look, listen, and comment. Still photography, multimedia, and video encouraged. Documentary required.
