Class Description

This class will start with a two week foundation of InDesign so that students will have the tools necessary to focus on the next three weeks, which will be creative graphic design including typography, two dimensional design principals, and grid structures. The last three weeks will focus on advanced features of InDesign to prepare students for designing and producing a printed photography publication.

This class will cover the creative, conceptual, and technical skills relevant to photographers creating photo books, magazines, catalogs, posters, and other visual materials that present photographic images and text in a printed format.

You will learn how to create a new multi-page document, set up master pages, margins, automatic page numbering and footers, import images, work with type, object tools, and colors. You will also learn about image color spaces, resolutions and how to work with black and white images with modern four color offset or digital printing.

We will also look at examples of successful photo books and learn how the principals employed in these books can inform decisions about designing your own projects.

Homework will be assigned and presented in class for discussion. For the final three week section, students can choose to work on either an assigned project or their own project.

Students can work with any version of InDesign they have available.
