HoundTown: The Stray Dog population of Blagoevgrad

Aleksandar Iliev | Bulgaria

It is enough for one to spend a single day in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaia to notice one inseparable aspect of the town’s character. As soon as you walk the streets for a couple of minutes, you will see some of the locals. And I am not talking about humans. You will find man’s four-legged furry best friends roaming around like they own the place.

Ever since I moved to Blago, to study, three years ago I have been in close proximity to the dogs. On a daily basis I have been naming them, feeding them, playing with them, and in some situations providing them with medical care.Someone has to, as most people turn to violence and ferocity. The same ferocity they claim the dogs possess.

With HoundTown I am aiming to show Blagoevgrad locals that these dogs, while relying on instincts to preserve themselves, are much more intelligent than people think. As long as they are shown compassion and understanding, they can live peacefully as mere fellow residents of this small town.
