The Cheer Leaders of Lagos

Chukwuka Tolulope Obu | Nigeria

Training Ground:
Cheerleaders of Lagos training ground is National Stadium Surulere, they practice despite lack of a proper gymnasium.

Lagos Cheer Nigeria was founded on March 2016, same year the International Cheer Union "ICU" (World governing body located in the USA for competitive cheer) was granted provisional status by the International Olympic committee "IOC".

Competitive Cheerleading is a sport not taking as seriously or given the recognition it deserves, despite the demands being rigorous as other sports that have made it to the Olympics, often mistaken as “Sideline cheerleading” that entails swinging of pom-poms, than a careful coordination of throws, jumps, falls, catches, tumbles, stunts all summarized in teamwork that if calculated wrongly could lead to serous injury.

This work focuses on the resilience and drive of “The Cheerleaders of Lagos” as they push to surmount hurdles of lack of proper recognition as a sport, poor training conditions and funding.

They hope to one day make it into the "ICU" to compete against other All-Star Cheerleading teams from across the world and also one day represent their country if and when competitive cheer leading is recognized fully at the Olympics.
