Day 2 Syringes with blood were also found; they explained that the purpose of the syringes is used for “Bluetooth” meaning that when one takes drugs and gets high, he or she draws his or her blood using the syringe and inject another person.

This photography project aims to foster discourse around substance abuse. This thought provoking body of work was done during a five day assignment on the “Clean the City” campaign in 2017. Although the focus of the assignment was to look at the other crime related issues, there was a need to highlight how substance abuse remains a major concern. This work looks beyond age, gender and race. Drug busts were made in Kempton Park, situated close to the country’s biggest port of entry O R Tambo International Airport. The city’s officials, the South African Police Service, the Ekurhuleni Metro Department Police, and health officials also took to the streets of Springs and Germiston; several raids were made in flats, houses, abandoned buildings and restaurants. Drug dealers were arrested, illegal operating taverns were shut down, but the question remains “is there a near end solution to end substance abuse?’

I am passionate about issues that engage marginalised communities and neglected sectors of the society. As a female photojournalist and a documentary photographer, I am inspired by the spirit of accomplishment and integrity. I believe I have a pretty broad goal in mind; and I have a better understanding of what is involved in the human lives. Being inspired by the spirit of humanism, I am involved in human rights issues involving women and children, and gender equality. Photographing the daily lives of people and their experiences has motivated me; my work presents complexity of everyday lives within this each and every community. Creative work is one of my endeavours to see my work’s content concentrated into real people’s life experiences.
