Not Broken

Hannah Yoon | Canada

According to Statistics Canada, youth ages 15 to 19 have a suicide rate of 7.7 per 100,000, while young people ages 20 to 24 have a suicide rate of 11 per 100,000 people. When young people go to universities, they feel the extra stress and pressure to perform. Mental health-related data is not being tracked at the universities so there is no clear understanding of what students are experiencing. This portrait series highlights the struggles of university students with their mental health. The taboo and shame associated with mental health is still prevalent. This makes it difficult for people to speak up and share their stories.

After hearing about a few deaths by suicides at a few nearby universities, I wanted to have a better understanding of what students experience with their mental health and being a student. I wanted my portraits to start conversations.
