Early Voting

Jean Ross | New York, United States

Opening day of early voting, Brooklyn Museum

These images capture the diversity of the community that votes early at the Brooklyn Museum, a community that is a microcosm of the country as a whole. The experience was inspiring and celebratory.I am in awe of the number of people who showed up early on the open day of early voting, a Saturday, and waited four or more hours to vote. Old people. Young people. Black, white. People brought stools and books and settled in. Sunday’s lines were modestly shorter, and there was a steady stream of voters throughout the week. In a year of social distancing, it was a profoundly moving and deeply communal experience.
