Everybody Skate is a documentary photo project highlighting women and gender non-conforming skateboarders in New York City. Captured on film since 2018, this project shares stories of courage and athleticism through intimate portraits of the diverse individuals that make up this small but growing community.
As a female skater growing up in the 90s, I often found myself being the only girl at the skatepark. It was intimidating to be a young woman and a minority in a male-dominated space, especially as a beginner.
Fortunately, the space is evolving and attitudes are changing. Women's skateboarding has been added to the 2020 Olympic Games and there are a growing number of organizations hosting skate clinics and events to create an inclusive and safe space for women, queer and trans people to learn new skills, get support and build confidence.
It's an exciting time in skateboarding and my aim is to showcase the diversity and trailblazing individuals that make up this positive new space through an honest and artistic lens.
While it’s exciting to capture the big board tricks on camera, I’m more interested in the faces that represent this growing community of women and gender non-conforming skaters, as well as the culture and camaraderie among this cohort. The city’s skateparks and public space doubling as skate spots also provides unique visual interest that I’m often exploring in my work.
For my medium, I prefer to shoot on classic black and white film or with color film as the analog photography process allows me to slow down, compose scenes and form deeper relationships with my subjects. I also enjoy the feeling of a mechanical film camera in my hands as it emulates the tactile feeling of skateboarding; muscles, hardware, agility – no batteries needed.
