Beyond The American Binary

Mariette Pathy Allen | United States

Transmen with 17 year old Transwoman at the "Southern Comfort" Conference

In the current political climate of prejudice and cruelty, I find some relief looking back at work I made of gender non-conforming people who are at ease in their own skin.

From my initial explorations of people who self-identified as crossdressers to more current collaborations with transmasculine, transfeminine, and other non-binary people, my goal has been to photograph trans people in the daylight, in everyday life, and when possible, in relationships.

As I continue to explore gender variance in the United States as well as in Cuba, and Burma and Thailand, I also continue to explore my own sensibilities.  Influenced by my former experience as a painter, and the study of cultural anthropology, I have found this long, ever changing exploration a source of exhilaration, as well as, occasionally, of despair.

Gender variance connects people from all walks of life. The most common prejudices almost vanish; tantamount is the respect for individual choices. I think of gender nonconformists as liberators, and harbingers of the future.

Mariette Pathy Allen has been photographing the transgender community for over 30 years. Through her artistic practice, she has been a pioneering force in gender consciousness, contributing to numerous cultural and academic publications about gender variance and lecturing throughout the globe. From activism to inner explorations, her work presents the broadest available imaging of the incredible diversity of those daring souls whose lives are committed to exploring the gender frontier.
