The other side of San Diego

Miguel Valencia | United States

The exhibit I present are photographs based on my documentary within the lifestyles of gang members within the most southern parts of San Diego California.

That is the other side of San Diego where it's not about beaches these are areas where if you are not familiar you could be hustled or shot. These are the sidewalks where the dope attics stay busy for the next fix and where anything could change your life in thirty seconds.

These are photographs about a very perosnal lifestyle I documented between 2018-2023.

I have pursued a subject that is dangerous; photographing within gang related areas if not dicey in those very moments while trying to avoid enemies pulling up and then among other things.

Over time I have developed a reputation for what I do and then being introduced to some of San Diego’s most prominent gang figures.

I shoot with my Leica camera for what they call ‘street photography’ specifically gang related photos about the lower end communities and relevant persons of those significant neighborhoods within the margins of Eastside, South East and South Bay San Diego, Ca.

My photography tells many stories if the eyes understand. I had the privilegeto had been around some of them that would eventually become victim to the system that are no longer a free man. I have shot photos of some who are no longer alive.

I shoot only documentary photography my project “The other side of San Diego” expresses that very lifestyle from the side walks of sleepy drug attics passed out along the busy streets to the gangsters that are more then happy to let you know where they are about.

My name is Miguel ‘Chromatic’ Valencia and I am pleased to display some of my work, welcome to the other side of San Diego.
