Young Musicians of Brazil

Paul Marotta | Brazil, Brazil

Young musicians from the U.S. and Brazil

In June 2019 I spent 2+ weeks traveling throughout the entire length of Brazil, 8 cities and 9 concerts in 16 days...as the staff photographer for the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra with conductor Ben Zander. Each day included either a side by side with a local youth orchestra, or more importantly an education event with some of the poorest young people living in the most dangerous and poorest conditions imaginable. So dangerous we often had to have a military police escort to safely transport us to the education centers located in areas ridled with drugs, crime and gang violence so our young people could work with Brazil's most vulnerable. "Favella" is a term that is no longer in use in Brazil and has since been replaced by "villas". For most if not all of these youg people of Brazil it is a matter of life or death to be able to escape their environment to participate in these musical activities. For the young people of the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, most of whom are going on to Harvard and Yale and Princeton and MIT and Juilliard and New England COnservatory, it is a world they are likely to have never encountered and may never do so again.
