People were welcoming refugees by distributing food and water. More than 40,000 Kurdish Yazidis were surrounded by ISIS for 8 days during some of the hottest days of summer without water or food.

13 May 2015, Teleskof, Mosul, Iraq: Kamelia, a Christian elderly woman from Teleskof is telling her story to NPF Christian forces. She was too old to leave the village when Daesh (ISIS) attacked so she stayed. Teleskof is 30 kilometres north of Mosul. It was an important target for ISIS because of its Christian population which Peshmerga forces freed 11 days after occupation. But it is still abandoned because it is in fire range of ISIS’s front line.

25 Dec 2014, Bapir Village, Mosul dam, Iraq: Some Kurdish Yasidi fighters after liberating Bapir Village are walking in destroyed holy places. ISIS exploded entire Yasidi sacred places in its territories. ISIS calls Yasidi KAFIR (unbelievers) Infidel.

3 Oct 2014, Sharia, Dohuk, Iraq: Yasidi woman is living with her family in an unfinished structure of a building in Sharia city, Dohuk. She survived her family, freed herself from ISIS, and ran to KRG. During ISIS attacks on Sinjar and Yasidi minority villages around Sinjar in Aug 2014, they separated men, women, and children. They mass murdered men, used women as sex slaves, and used children under 12 as underage soldiers after brainwashing them.

5 Oct 2014, Rabiaa, Mosul, Iraq: A volunteer Yasidi Peshmerga is trying to call his family after a liberating operation of Rabiaa in the city’s unfinished hospital building. Rabiaa is the official border of Iraq and Syria and ISIS had control over this city for two months. Peshmerga with support from the coalition liberated the city. Liberating Rabiaa was the most important step before liberating Sinjar.

7 Oct 2014, Zakho, Dohuk, Iraq: A Yasidi refugee between thousands of other refugees in an unfinished construction field with his pillow. He sleeps every night in a different place. No one were expecting for that huge amount of refugees so the KRG local government started to place them in schools, streets, and even unfinished construction sites.

23 Oct 2014, Daqoq, Kirkuk, Iraq: Some PKK fighters are posing for foreign photographers in the misty weather of winter. After the ISIS attack in Aug 2014 to KRG of Iraq, all Kurdish fighters from Iran, Turkey, and Syria gathered to fight and resist against ISIS offenses they acted as support forces for Peshmerga in regions like Sinjar, Makhmour, and Kirkuk.

11 Sep 2015, Daqoq, Kirkuk, Iraq: Injured Peshmerga forces carried back. While Peshmerga is offending to the Daqoq south of Kirkuk, ISIS used IDEs to slow down their progress. Most of casualties of Peshmerga had been killed or injured by IDEs or other suicide bombings.

6 Oct 2015, Sinjar, Mosul, Iraq: A view of a mountain road of Mosul to Sinjar, which is main exit road out of city. During Aug. 2014 ISIS mass murdered Yasidis who tried to run from Sinjar mountain. We can see personal belongings of refugees remaining from that mass murder. Those who did not succeed to run were arrested by ISIS forced to either convert to Islam, pay Jaziya (a fine for non-Muslims), or were captured as war prisoners. They divided men and women, executed men, and captured women as Sabiya. Still there are so many Yasidi girls and women in ISIS’s hands as sex slaves.

8 Nov 2015, Romilan, Al-Hasakah, Syria: Mother of martyr Hwzan Direk is mourning over her son’s coffin. Hwzan and his 7 comrades of YPG forces were killed by suicide bombers attacking the frontline.

16 Nov 2015, Sinjar, Mosul, Iraq: Two Tal-Afarian suspects arrested by Peshmerga forces to send them back for further investigations over their identity and possible plans. There are rumors among the Tel-Afarian youth that they joined ISIS and had been involved in mass murder and capturing of Yasidi people.

8 Nov 2015, Romilan, Al-Hasakah, Syria: Family members of martyr Hwzan Direk are mourning over his coffin in his funeral. Hwzan and his 7 comrades were killed by suicide bombers attacking the frontline.

16 Nov 2015, Sinjar, Mosul, Iraq: Some of the families from Qabousiye village who succeeded in running from ISIS territories and are handing themselves over to Peshmerga forces. After liberating Sinjar more than 200 families from Qabosiye ran to KRG.

26 March 2016, Makhmour, Mosul, Iraq: A boy crying on his sister’s body, killed by an ISIS sniper while running from their village (Mahana) out of the war zone and to the Peshmerga frontline.

8 August 2016, Bashiqa, Mosul, Iraq: A young woman just arrived at the Peshmerga frontline at Bashiqa hills after running away from Mosul and walking about 6 hours through the area which ISIS has control over. This area is full of IEDs and is too dangerous to walk.

18 August 2016, Batewa, Kirkuk, Iraq: A Peshmerga woman holding a baby and taking care of him. He ran away from Haweja with his family and has just arrived at the Peshmerga frontline at Batewa Hills, south of Kirkuk.

9 Dec. 2016, Al-Shirgat, Salah ad Din, Iraq: New IDPs fleeing Mosul use a Hashed Al Sunni boat to cross the Tigris river. Members of Hashed Al Sunni help and protect civilians escape ISIS-controlled areas in Mosul and cross the Tigris River and enter Shirqat District where they will be sheltered in camps. Hashed Al Sunni is a Sunni tribal force sometimes referred to as "tribal mobilization" or "national mobilization.” It is a member of Hashed al-Shaabi, an umbrella organization created in 2014, which includes an array of paramilitary forces who vary widely in skill and in the degree to which they are actually under government control. The main groups are Iranian-backed Shiite militias, including Ketaeb Hezbollah, Asaib Ahl al-Haq, and Badr. The Hashed have played a major role in the anti-ISIS fight in Iraq but forces within it have also carried out abuses.

6 Dec. 2016, Qayyarah, Mosul, Iraq: Oil fields in northern Iraq have been burning nonstop for more than six months. Islamic State militants had set fire to at least 19 oil wells in the Qayarrah district, south of Mosul, as they were forced to retreat by Iraqi forces. Burning oil wells continue to spew out toxic fumes that burn people’s throats and turn their communities into a smoke-filled hell. Aid workers said doctors had reported a shortage of medicine as they treat many patients for bronchitis. Relief organizations are providing clean drinking water to residents in the Qayarrah district. The situation around Mosul has become more desperate with a key water pipe destroyed during fighting, UNICEF said. An offensive to drive Islamic State militants out of their last major city stronghold in Iraq was launched last month and more than 70,000 civilians have fled the city.
