Kira's Henna Party

audrey gottlieb | Morocco

The bridegroom's family (women only) arrive at the lodge for his bride's Henna Party two days before the wedding. While the women are enjoying their afternoon together, the men are having what they call affectionately their own "Menna Party", eating and drinking by the seaside.

In June 2019 I attended a friend's urban Amazigh-American wedding mix celebration in Agadir, Morocco. Two days before the elaborate marriage ceremony, female friends and relatives of both the American bride and Moroccan groom were invited to an intimate Henna Party at a lodge on the outskirts of the city. These photos offer a glimpse into the Moroccan Berber countryside, traditional henna application and socializing between women belonging to two distinct cultures.

Audrey Gottlieb was born in Allenwood, New.Jersey (USA). She graduated from Temple University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in French and later studied photography at the School of Visual Arts and the International Centre of Photography in New York City. She worked as a photographer, media liaison, editor and peacekeeper for the United Nations in Cyprus, Kenya, Somalia, Switzerland and New York. Gottlieb's work has been widely exhibited throughout the world. She currently lives in York, Maine.

I have always been captivated by light, shadow and color. I have a natural curiosity about the world, which I am compelled to explore with my camera and notebook. As an observer of society and nature, I hope my photographs reveal the intensity of the experience that I felt when making the picture.
