Submitting work to SDN

Join a Growing Community of Committed Documentary Photographers

We encourage both professional and non-professional photographers to submit work to SocialDocumentary.net. The primary criteria is your commitment to use the documentary form to explore the human condition—with the goal of increasing our understanding of it.

What distinguishes this site from other image sharing websites is that we are committed to maintaining a high level of quality. Hence all submissions will be reviewed according the following criteria:

  • Aesthetic quality. The photographs must have strong point of view and have a deliberate and meaningful composition.
  • Documentary integrity: The images and the writing must avoid sensationalism, must be factual (if facts are presented), and must exhibit respect for the subject and viewer.
  • Technical quality of digital files (resolution, focus, exposure, etc..)

With our very simple web-based tools, you will be able to create an online exhibit of your documentary photography and submit for approval. Your exhibit application must include a minimum of six photographs, an abstract about the exhibit, and photo captions. We will respond to your application within 1-3 business days (usually on the shorter side). Your exhibit does not go live until you make any final changes, choose to make it live, and either pay the standard fee or select a free trial.

When preparing your images, they must be at least 1500 pixels in one dimension, and under 5 mb per image. You may need to edit them in Adobe Photoshop or other image editing software to bring them down to these specifications, especially if the originals come from a high megapixel camera (exceeding 6 megapixels).

STEP - Payment

When your exhibit is approved and you make it live, you will be required to pay a fee per image. The fee is based on a per year basis. Click here for complete fee policy including free trial period. You always have the option for submitting an exhibit as a free trial without paying. When the trial period is over, you can choose to pay to maintain your exhibit or let it expire.

After creating your exhibit, you can edit your exhibit photos and text at any time. You can choose to hide or show individual images, change the order of photos, or temporarily hide your entire exhibit. You can also add additional information in other fields for 1) credits, 2) photographer's statement, 3) collaborating NGOs, 4) contact information, 5) a custom field of your choice.
