Love Is Not Necessarily Tender

Jaka Mojškerc | Canada

The series explores the contrast between Love and survival among the Inuit. The black-and-white images depict moments of tactile connection between people. The colour images depict the reality of hunting, a historical and contemporary foundation of Inuit identity: intense scenes where the Inuit must endure extreme conditions, unimaginable to people in the West. The colours enhance the drama of these moments because of how crucial they are for existence, but are often unpleasant for the Western viewer to see. Something that is a default, a part of everyday life in the Arctic becomes a harsh truth in the West. The contrast between Love and search for food emphasises the coexistence of these two worlds in the same geographical place and within every individual in the Arctic. But only one of these two categories is universal for most people across our globe. The other one isn't. How do we in the West see these images and people in them? Can we identify with them? Why have we become sensitive to such scenes? Perhaps because they remind us of Death. The most universal truth for all human beings.

My personal work now is based on principles of Documentary Photography - Cinéma Vérité style, observational fly on the wall approach. I understand that making decisions like choosing the angle, speed, exposure… makes Photography impossible to be objective, but I nevertheless believe that the most real photographs are the ones where I as a photographer have nothing to do with what is going on in the scene and the situation is not directed or staged. This is also why I have very strong opinions on how Photography is practiced, even abused today. I believe that Documentary Photography is the purest form of Photography. For me, it is manifested through snapshot, described by Lisette Model:

“The picture isn’t straight. It isn’t done well. It isn’t composed. It isn’t thought out. And out of this imbalance, and out of this not knowing, and out of this real innocence toward the medium comes an enormous vitality and expression of life.”
