In a village overlooking Lake Como, a few families still tend their animals and live off their products. They follow different rhythms. Spring has the energy of new beginnings, summer is green with pastures and blue with mountain skies, autumn tastes like sweet jam, and winter carries ancient knowledge. Through the year, pigs are regularly fed, cleaned, with plenty of indoor and outdoor space. When winter approaches, with the first snow, the slaughtering of the pig takes place. Rich of symbology and references to stories handed down from one generation to the next, it is indeed a bloody day but we should perhaps question what happens on a bigger scale, behind the packed meats sold in big chain supermarkets.
Outside the loud debate between vegetarians, vegans and the meat production industry, the reality of small local farmers exists. The killing of the pig, in this context, belongs to the cycles of the land. What is left, when all the arguing to prove different points of view is gone? Life there goes on silently, without disrupting the environment, whose alteration is very often created by the excesses of our modern world.
‘We need farmers,
poets, people who know how to make bread,
who love trees and recognise the wind.
More than the year of growth
we need the year of attention.
Attention to those who fall, to the sun that rises
and the dying, the growing boys,
attention even to a simple lamppost,
to a peeling wall.
Today being revolutionary means taking away
more than adding, slowing down more than speeding up,
it means appreciating silence, light,
fragility, gentleness.’ Franco Arminio
Observing the life and the traditions of the small community where the project was developed has brought me to more questions and less definite anwers. I guess this is, sometimes, what photography also is. An invitation to be better witnesses, to drop mental constructs and be curious, open to what others - people and situations- might teach us.
