Exhibit Title: George Floyd Square
Location: United States
On May 25, 2020, Minneapolis police officers arrested George Floyd, a 46 year old Black man after he used a counterfeit $20 bill. He was handcuffed and pinned to the ground. A witness filmed officer Derek Chauvin who is White, with his knee pressed on Mr. Floyd’s neck while Floyd pleaded for his life. His death sparked rage across the nation, across the world.
38th & Chicago, where George Floyd was killed, has become a memorial. George Floyd Square has been visited by thousands who come to pay their respects, to protest, to share their stories, to heal. Masses of flowers and tributes of all kinds flow into the site. A large group of community leaders and volunteers meet daily, organize events, and lovingly maintain and care for the site.
I have been actively photographing at the Square since George Floyd’s death in an attempt to visually capture a sense of this place. The dedicated community, those who visit from near and far, and the wealth of offerings and messages left at the memorial tell a developing story of a call for justice and for peace.
At this time the community and the City of Minneapolis are actively engaged in discussions about the future of George Floyd Square. The goal is to have a plan and design by the end of 2024. There are complicated political, economical and social issues involved. I feel that it is important to build a permanent memorial that will honor those we have lost, and also create a space for people to heal and connect and to celebrate our shared humanity.
