The Hundry River

The project is an ongoing visual documentation of the changing relationship between people and their land influenced by mighty river Brahmaputra amidst recurring floods in Assam. Each year, the state of Assam experiences widespread inundation, with over 70% of its land falling under moderate to high flood hazard zones. This work explores themes of climate change, migration, and adaptability across socio-economic backgrounds. It also examines the shifting course of the Brahmaputra River, known for its braiding, which causes severe erosion, loss of livelihood anddisplacement.

Agriculture, central to Assam’s economy about 61% of thepopulation is engaged in agricultural activities (Economic Survey, 2014-15) and agriculture continues to support more than 75 % population of the state, is increasingly threatened as cultivable land is lost annually to the river’s swelling waters.

On an average around 80sq kilometers of land is lost every year caused by Brahmaputra and its tributaries. The river, once considered a friend for depositing fertile soil on cultivable land during seasonal floods, has gradually turned into a foe.
