Lalibela is a centre of pilgrimage. Among the dimly lit passageways and tunnels of the medieval churches, robed priests and monks still float; the smell of incense and beeswax candles still pervades.

The Orthodox Faith

cesar suarez | Ethiopia

Commons scenes in Lalibela, a small town in northern Ethiopia that’s home to 11 spectacular churches carved both inside and out from a single rock some 900 years ago. Religious ritual is central to the life of the town, with regular processions, extensive fasts, crowds of singing and dancing priests. This combined with its extraordinary religious architecture and simplicity of life, gives the city of Lalibela a distinctively timeless almost biblical atmosphere. The following pictures were taken during a funeral in a central park of the town and inside orthodox church.
