Biography

With an educational background in Social Psychology, in 1995 I retired from a 25-year career in human services during which I designed, implemented, and managed 17 formal projects. I primarily worked with violent juvenile offenders and sexually abused children but, in 2014, I returned to human services for two years to work with homeless families.

My interventions were based on a theoretical model I created entitled, "The Nature of Being Human: A Model for Attempting to Understand the Complexities of Being Human." Successes of my experiences resulted in me serving on three national task forces, providing expert testimony before the U. S. House of Representatives and the California Supreme Court, delivering hundreds of conference presentations, and consulting with numerous governmental and NGO agencies.

I began my career in fine-art and social documentary photography by studying two years at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and one summer at the School for Photographic Studies in Prague, Czech Republic. Since 1997, my photography has been exhibited in gallery and museum shows in France, Belize, New York City, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Oregon, and Indiana. My photos have appeared in various publications and online galleries. Some of my documentary projects are posted on this website.

My "Nature of Being Human" model is the foundation of my personal way of viewing the world and my own individuality. To promote a broader understanding of individuality, I revised and re-branded my model as "Embracing Individuality."

Further, “Embracing Individuality” has been adapted to address photography-related issues as “Photographing Individuality.” The focus is on helping photographers more clearly understand: (1) their own individuality; (2) their individualized way of viewing the world; and, (3) the way they view subjects they photograph. In 2022, "Photographing Individuality" was introduced via online photo-related posts and videos. In 2024, platforms will be expanded to include published books, blogs, and an online course.

Also in 2024, there are plans to launch an international online private membership groups entitled "Photographing Individuality" for serious amateur and professional photographers. Emphasis will be on capturing images that accurately reflect the nature of individuality. Photos captured by group members in response to thematic assignments will be selected for inclusion in an online gallery.

Finally, for advanced amateur and professional photographers, there will be a documentary subgroup of "Photographing Individuality" addressing strategies and techniques related to my personal approach to creating documentary photo projects regarding individuality. With new documentary projects launched every year, selected subgroup members will be identified and invited to participate in formal documentary projects. With participating photographers credited, completed projects will be presented in traditional and online galleries, museums, and/or various forms of publication.

To date, I have completed documentary photo projects in France, Cuba, Belize, Czech Republic, and the United States. In 2024, I hope to launch my pandemic-delayed project in Peru and formalize a potential project in Uganda. Within my “Embracing Individuality” model, there are numerous concepts and perspectives upon which documentary projects may be based. The documentary subgroup of “Photographing Individuality” will explore related opportunities.

Ultimately, my goal is to promote a global community of independent and collaborative documentary photographers dedicated to creating projects that accurately represent individuality. "Embracing Individuality" and "Photographing Individuality" are the foundations upon which all efforts will be based.
