Marsico - Down on the street

Andrea Ciccarese | Puglia, Italy

The history of the Marsico family began in the early 1900s with Nicola, an acrobat who after decided to found the Marsico Circus. It was the 1920s and Nicola travelled around Europe entertaining thousands of people: clowns, trapeze artists, acrobats, lion tamers… everyone in the family learned the art of the circus and show business.

Around the end of the 60’s the activity of the Marsico family changed, they decided to become carousel operators, the job that they still do today on a regular basis. Their endless touring around the world, without stopping and without a return, seems to end when Domenico, Nicola’s son, buys a piece of land in San Cesario di Lecce, a small town in Puglia.

The nomadic lifestyle after almost a century is about to change; but can a piece of land change the history and the soul of those who have made the world their home?

Marsico – Down on the street is the result of two years of photographic research that tells the story of the family’s life through a typical day, from morning to night.
