In the bustling fishing market of Thengapattanam, Tamil Nadu, the air is thick with the scent of salt and diesel. Fishermen gather around their boats—some bent over, fixing broken parts, while others load supplies and food, preparing for their long journey into the deep sea.
I wandered through the maze of vessels and managed to climb aboard a few old boats, their wood peeling and rust settling in—slowly rotting, yet holding onto a quiet, weathered charm.
On one, I spotted toothbrushes hanging by threads, swaying gently with the wind. A tiny makeshift toilet sat in the corner—a simple reminder of the lives lived at sea.
