While there are no official numbers for the NO KINGS Nationwide Day of Defiance, it is estimated that over 5 million people attended nearly 2,000 events to voice their opposition to the authoritarian actions of the Trump Administration.
When photographing well-documented scheduled protest rallies such as the massive NO KINGS Nationwide Day of Defiance, my goal is to transcend the immediate—often cliché feeling—messaging of the loudest participants, largest crowds, and most clever signs. While journalistic records and broad evidence of these historic events are critical (even when familiar), many other photographers are there for those express reasons. As a photographer focused on long-term, more conceptual nonfiction projects, my photographs instead attempt to explore the full and complex temporal, geographic, social, and cultural context of these moments. I am a witness to where participants' deepest concerns are expressed in emboldened conversations with the greater dynamics that define the sorted history and troubled trajectory of the United States, sharing instances of where individual and group values and agendas align with universal concerns, and thus, with some hope, might illuminate where we find healing paths forward.
