Them That Do

Lori Waselchuk | PA, United States

Them That Do is a multi-media project created in collaboration with Philadelphia’s block captains that prioritizes local knowledge and documents the work of community-building at a time when the pursuit of profit supplants the pursuit of humanity, threatening our fundamental comforts and safety.

The portraits, short videos and interviews of block captains celebrate and legitimize the organizing power and inspiring tools we all need to harness as citizens in this challenging time.

Block parties and urban gardens are often organized by block captains. I photograph the intimacy, connection and joy revealed at block parties and community gardens, in order to learn how our bodies’ gestures can convey togetherness, and signal how we might move in our fractured time.

My photographic work is a simultaneous inquiry into the lived experiences/poetic bodies of humans and the systems they inhabit, contest, and construct.
