During the pilgrimage and religious celebrations of Qoyllur Rit’i, musicians play a crucial role in upholding the rhythm and keeping time. For three continuous days, the music fills the air as pilgrims journey to the Sinkara Valley to honour the Apus, the Spirits of the Mountains, and express gratitude for the upcoming harvest.

The Condor & The Bull

Michael Bednar | Peru

The Condor & The Bull examines the rich cultural traditions of the Indigenous Quechua communities of the Andes Mountains at a time of significant transition. As globalization, environmental pressures, and climate change increasingly affect traditional livelihoods, Quechua communities continue to demonstrate resilience in maintaining cultural practices and stewardship of the land. This project seeks to explore contemporary lived experiences while highlighting the enduring relationship between culture, identity, and environment.

This long-term project captures the unique culture of the Quechua, their deep connection to the land, and their rich spiritual traditions, all while navigating the pressures of a swiftly transforming world. The resulting body of work aims to contribute meaningfully to conversations around Indigenous knowledge, sustainability, and cultural continuity at a time when humankind collectively faces significant challenges and difficult decisions about the future.
