The Memory Shore chronicles the decade-long recovery of Rikuzentakata, Japan, following the devastating tsunami of 2011 that nearly obliterated the town. This project documents the personal healing journey of Junichi Kikuchi, a traditional tatami mat maker who lost both his business and family in the disaster, alongside the evolving, scarred landscape. Through these fragmented images, a narrative of trauma emerges, revealing the resilience of survivors as they navigate a transformed environment while grappling with the lingering scars of their past.
This personal project began with Junichi Kikuchi recalling the traumatic day of the 2011 tsunami while reflecting on its aftermath during a summer night in 2014. As a resident and tatami shop owner in Rikuzentakata, Japan, Junichi and his family escaped to higher ground, but his son Yuuki, responding to a firefighting duty, tragically lost his life. The narrative unfolds through Junichi's connection to the Ugoku-Tanabata festival, a significant event symbolizing resilience and remembrance, held six months after the disaster.
Ben first met Junichi at the festival and later learned about the family's struggles and the impact of the tsunami on their lives, particularly after visiting Junichi's tatami shop. Over subsequent visits, the author witnessed the Kikuchi family's journey of rebuilding their lives as they grappled with their loss. A hidden cottage in the forest holds letters from other survivors expressing their grief and longing for lost loved ones, highlighting the emotional scars that remain within the community.
Through the intertwining themes of the festival, the Kikuchi family, and the letters, the narrative explores memories of trauma and loss, illustrating how these experiences shape the uncertain future of the survivors. This decade-long relationship between the author and the locals illustrates a shared tapestry of memories, reflecting the enduring emotional landscape of Rikuzentakata.
