The Baobab Tree and the Lion
Photographer: andrea torrei
Exhibit Title: The Baobab Tree and the Lion
Location: Senegal
Set along the coast of Senegal, The Baobab Tree and the Lion observes a country in transition, where ancient rhythms still pulse beneath the surface of rapid change. Between sea and dust, between tradition and construction sites, the work explores how people inhabit this in-between space: grounded in faith and community, yet facing a future rising fast and concrete. The title draws from two national symbols — the baobab and the lion — evoking strength, rootedness, and pride. Each image tries to reveal how these values persist amid transformation. The series is about sensing how it feels the fragile balance between permanence and uncertainty that defines contemporary Senegal.
My work explores the relationship between people and their surroundings. With a background in Political Science and International Studies, I approach photography through a historical and social lens, attentive to how personal stories reflect broader transformations.
I am drawn to moments where daily life reveals traces of resilience, faith, and adaptation — places where the visible landscape mirrors invisible shifts within a community. Working mainly in Africa and the Mediterranean, I use photography to observe how tradition and modern life coexist, often in fragile balance.
I see documentary photography as a way to understand change —not by focusing on single events, but by staying close to everyday experience. Through long-term projects, I aim to build a visual language that connects individual experience with collective memory, exploring ideas of belonging, identity, and continuity in a time of transition.
