A demonstrator raises a hybrid U.S.–Mexico flag during protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in front of Los Angeles City Hall, June 12, 2025. Standing above police officers, the protester symbolizes immigrant resilience and the demand for justice within the structures of U.S. democracy.

Biography

Hi, I’m Álvaro. I’m a photographer, musicologist, and sound artist. I earned a PhD in Musicology in Buenos Aires, and I’m currently a professor and researcher at the Autonomous University of Baja California.

I take photos because I love telling stories. I’m drawn to moments that speak for themselves—like the intensity of a live concert, the focus in a player’s eyes during a game, or a quiet scene that suddenly feels meaningful.

My approach is deeply documentary. I’m interested in capturing what’s real—raw emotions, spontaneous gestures, those in-between moments that say more than posed ones. My background in music and sound shapes how I see: I pay attention to rhythm, detail, and the things that aren’t always obvious, but still carry a lot of feeling. I try to make honest images that last, that keep resonating over time.

I currently contribute as a photographer to SOPA Images (Hong Kong) and ZUMA Press (USA), two international photo agencies that distribute my work to media outlets around the world.

I’m a dad to a passionate young basketball player, a baby who tags along to shoots, and I share life with my partner, who’s a flutist and improviser. That mix of music, movement, and family flows through everything I do.
