New Doorways For Dakar's Youth

Bennett Barthelemy | Senegal

A street view in early morning of Thiaroye Gare, a suburb of Dakar, Senegal. It is estimated that 50% live below the poverty line in Dakar.

The images and multi media piece are the result of a 10 day visit to Thiaroye Gare in Dakar, Senegal in November of 2013. My goal was to get a sense of the challenges facing youth there. I also hoped to document the process of an invitied international NGO as they worked in tandem with a local NGO to train Senegalese adults in experiential education to improve the lives of youth.

I would call my style of shooting journalistic and I strive for capturing pivotal moments by anticipating them - rather than setting up moments.  I have ideas going in, but I like to let those go and to let the action dictate more of the outcomes and enjoy a result that feels more authentic.
