UnderStanding represents a journey above and beneath the surface where physical rules are rewritten, perception is turned quite literally upside down, the human form is rendered weightless and where we are all, as we should be, rendered equal.
This project is dived in 2 parts: mutimedia and still images.
In the multimedia part of the project, I’m attempting to convey this liberty, this freedom of movement, using the way that light is refracted through water to create a tension between image, physical movement and aesthetic impression.
The still image part of the project follows seventy-two years old Alan Kenny to North Sulawesi, Indonesia, where after overcoming many obsctacles, long haul flights and many transfers he can finally go diving and experience the freedom of movement he has been longing for.
The two parts of this project complement each others: the multimedia is all about the underwater feeling of physical freedom while the stills are a more accurate decription of all the challenges that need to be overcome in order to reach that freedom.
