Fear of death. Anne feels like her life will be ending soon. That paralyzing fear makes her not able to enjoy the time she has left in life.

Physical life, arbitrarily defined as the time between birth and death, is limited to measurable variables. On a higher, more conceptual level, life sometimes starts fading away years before actual death occurs. The perception of our own existence morphs through the different stages of life. Some people experience part of their lives in an existential limbo, partly departed, partly here. This state can be caused by traumatic personal loss, illness, fear of death, or angst. Whatever the reason that caused it, this existential limbo can inflict significant pain to the person that experiences it.

Using simple portraiture, as well as double exposures and sequential images, this project studies the interface of life “lived while departed”, where our past is present, as one faces the inevitability of the passage of time, and ultimately our own death.
