Feeling, 2020

Sophie Park | Massachusetts, United States

Oscar Nosa, 22, of Dorchester, voted for the first time on Nov. 2.

"I've never been this excited for any election. We all want to change the world somehow. Sometimes we feel like we don't have the power to do it. And I feel like voting has the power to make a difference. So I'm like, 'Why not choose that power, then?'

I feel like for me, what is at stake is actually the life of the people who look like me and my family," Oscar says. He immigrated to the United States from Nigeria when he was twelve. "Obviously, I wasn't born in America. I'm an immigrant. And being an immigrant in America, it's not the easiest thing in the world. The only thing we're trying to make a difference in is at least to get equality and get what the people of this country deserve. I believe that is what I'm voting for."

Feeling, 2020 is a project inspired by my own journey to process this moment in history. Photographer GianCarlo Lobo and I talked to voters around Massachusetts to try and understand how people are processing the 2020 election season. Here’s how they feel.

Sophie Park is an award winning visual journalist based in Boston, MA. Since graduating from Boston University in 2020 with a B.A. in international relations, she has worked as a teaching assistant for an introductory photography course at Harvard Extension School. She also leads a team of COVID-19 contact tracers for the state of Massachusetts.

As a photographer and scholar, her perspectives are shaped by her semi-nomadic upbringing in Missouri, New Jersey, and Cambodia. While behind the camera, her goal is simple: to capture otherwise fleeting moments, connect people, and debunk stereotypes through visual mediums.
